How It Works
What Goes Into A Gas Fireplace Installation
Almost every fireplace we put into a Grande Prairie home is a direct-vent unit, and there is a good reason for that. Direct-vent is sealed combustion: the outer pipe of a co-axial vent draws combustion air from outdoors, the inner pipe carries exhaust back out, and a fixed pane of ceramic glass keeps the firebox separate from your living room. Older B-vent fireplaces pull combustion air from inside the house and dump it up a chimney, which in a tight modern home means heating air and then sending it outside.
The scope of our work is the gas appliance itself, and we are direct about where that line sits. We size and run the gas line, install the drip leg and shutoff, route and terminate the vent to the appliance manual and the CSA B149.1 Natural Gas and Propane Installation Code, set and level the unit, make the electrical connection for the ignition module and blower kit, and commission it with a gas pressure reading, a combustion check, and a carbon monoxide test. Framing, drywall, mantel, stone, and tile are finishing trades, so we coordinate the rough-in dimensions and vent path with your builder or renovation contractor.

Gas Fireplace Problems We Fix
Fireplaces sit unused all summer, then get asked to work every night from October to April. These are the faults we get called on most.
Pilot Won't Stay Lit
You hold the knob, the pilot lights, you let go, and it dies. On a millivolt fireplace that usually means a weak thermocouple or thermopile no longer generating enough millivolts to hold the gas valve open. A dirty pilot hood, a partly blocked orifice, or a loose connection at the valve will do the same. We test thermopile output under load rather than guessing at it.
Fireplace Will Not Ignite Or Just Clicks
An intermittent pilot ignition (IPI) unit that clicks and never catches is usually a drifted spark gap, a dirty igniter, a fouled flame-sense rod, a dead battery backup, or a control module that has lost its sequence. Older millivolt units with a remote may simply not be sending the call.
Flames Go Out After A Few Minutes
A fireplace that lights normally and shuts down ten minutes later is telling you something about combustion. A blocked or restricted vent, a failed spill switch or high limit, a thermopile that fades as it heats, or a bad gasket letting the firebox lose its seal will all do this. On a sealed direct-vent unit it is usually vent related, and it needs to be found, not reset.
White Haze Or Soot On The Glass
A light white film on the ceramic glass in the first few burns is normal curing residue. A haze that keeps coming back, or black soot on the glass and log tops, is not. That points to incomplete combustion: log sets placed wrong, plugged burner ports, incorrect gas pressure, or a vent that is not drawing properly.
Gas Smell Around The Fireplace
A faint odour on the first burn of the season is burned-off dust. A gas odour that lingers is not, and it is not something to troubleshoot yourself. Leave the house and call from outside. Loose fittings, a failed valve seat, a cracked flex connector, or a pilot that has gone out on an older unit can all leak, and every one is fixable once a gas fitter is on site.
Blower Noisy Or Not Running
The blower kit pushes fireplace heat out into the room instead of up the wall. A fan that rattles, grinds, or hums without turning usually has worn bearings, a failed capacitor or speed control, a plugged fan cavity, or a thermodisc no longer closing when the firebox comes up to temperature.
Remote Or Wall Thermostat Not Responding
Handheld remotes, wall thermostats, and receiver modules all need batteries, pairing, and a working connection back to the gas valve. A unit that only runs on the manual switch, or one that will not respond to a temperature call, usually has a dead receiver battery, a lost pairing, a failed module, or a wiring fault at the valve terminals.
Delayed Ignition Or Weak, Yellow Flames
A soft "whoomp" a second or two after the burner calls means gas is pooling before it lights, and that is a service call, not a quirk. Weak, lazy, or yellow-tipped flames point the same direction: plugged burner ports, low manifold pressure, a restricted gas line, or a unit still set up for the wrong fuel after a propane conversion.

Inserts, Built-Ins And Direct-Vent Options
Three decisions shape how a gas fireplace lives in your home: what kind of appliance goes in, how it lights and how you control it, and how it is sized, vented, and fed.
Direct-Vent, Insert Or Freestanding
A zero-clearance built-in is framed into a wall and finished over, which is what most new builds and basement developments use. A gas insert slides into an existing wood-burning or masonry fireplace and vents up the old chimney through a liner, turning a drafty firebox into a heat source. A freestanding gas stove sits out on a hearth pad and radiates from all sides, which suits cabins and acreage homes. After that it is a question of look: a traditional log-set unit, or a long linear model with glass media.
Ignition Systems And Controls
Millivolt fireplaces run a standing pilot that keeps a thermopile warm, and that thermopile generates enough voltage to open the gas valve on its own. The upside is real in this country: a millivolt unit lights and heats through a power outage. Intermittent pilot ignition (IPI) units skip the standing pilot and spark on demand, which saves gas through the summer but needs power or a battery backup. On either you can add a handheld remote, a wall thermostat, and a blower kit that pushes heat into the room.
Sizing, Venting And Gas Supply
Heating capacity is rated in BTU/h input, and most residential fireplaces land between roughly 15,000 and 40,000. A great room can take a larger unit; an oversized fireplace in a finished basement will cook you out of it. Venting follows the appliance: co-axial pipe for a direct-vent install, a co-linear liner kit up an existing chimney for most inserts, with termination clearances to windows, doors, soffits, decks, and grade that are not negotiable. We size the gas line for the actual load, install a drip leg, and set manifold pressure by gauge. Propane acreages get the correct orifices before commissioning.
Our Process
How A Fireplace Installation Runs
A straightforward fireplace install is usually a one to two day job once the unit is on site. Here is how we run it, from the first site visit to the inspection.
Consultation And Site Check
We come out and look at the actual wall. Where the gas supply is and whether the line can carry another appliance, what vent route is possible and where it can legally terminate, the clearances to combustibles, and what the framing opening needs to be. For an insert, we measure the firebox and check the flue.
Gas Line And Venting
We size and run the gas line for the appliance load, install the shutoff and drip leg, and pressure test the line. Then the vent goes in: co-axial pipe through the wall or roof on a direct-vent unit, or a co-linear liner up the chimney on an insert. Elbow counts, rise, and total length follow the appliance manual.
Appliance Set, Connection And Commissioning
The unit is set and levelled, connected to gas and to power for the ignition module and blower kit, and the log set or glass media placed exactly to the manufacturer layout, which is what keeps the flame pattern clean. Then we commission it: manifold and inlet pressure checked by gauge, ignition sequence tested, a combustion check, and a carbon monoxide test.
Permit, Inspection, Warranty And Cleanup
We pull the Alberta gas permit before the work starts and book the inspection when it is finished. The manufacturer warranty gets registered in your name, and you keep the paperwork for a future sale. Drop sheets stay down, packaging and old equipment leave with us, and we walk you through running the unit before we go.
Annual Service, Financing And The Rest Of Your Heating System
A gas fireplace should be serviced once a year, before the heating season starts. That visit covers the ceramic glass and the white film that builds on it, the gasket, the pilot assembly and burner ports, log and glass media placement, the fan, gas pressure, the vent and its termination, and a carbon monoxide test. Booking it alongside your annual HVAC maintenance means one visit covers the fireplace and the rest of the equipment in the house.
